LIFE HERITAGE NEWS FOR AUGUST - OCTOBER 2009

UGANDA--HERE WE COME!

After two years of seeking the Lord's direction, Dr. Burton is finally heading back to the African continent on January 20 - February 2, 2010 where he will minister in Uganda with Walk with God Ministries International. After a weekend of ministry in Kamapla, he will head to Maska for a six day conference and revival where he will be the main speaker for the morning and evening, and present empowerment workshops to women and men during the days. A highlight of the trip will feature ministry at the Triangle of Hope Orphanage which is in desperate need of facilities. Pastor Godfrey Mulonde informs me that a structure can be built for just $10,000 (look for details on a future mission trip where you can volunteer to assist in the building project).

In addition to the funds for the orphanage building, we need to raise $5,000 for the January trip. These funds will cover travel expenses, an LCD projector, books for 200 pastors, and gifts for the orphans who are currently living in temporary accommodations. As the Spirit moves on your heart, please give generously to this worthy cause. Remember, all donations are tax deductible. All who donate over $25 will receive a  copy of Dr. Dexter Thomas' hilarious and uplifting new book, "Messy Revival."

LAST QUARTER DATES (2009)

OCTOBER SPECTRUM COLUMN: ARE WE THERE YET?

"President Carter is right, and President Obama is..., well let’s just say he’s not about to commit political suicide. For some reason, the current President refuses to acknowledge that racism is deeply rooted in American soil and intricately tied to American identity...." Have you been keeping up with the current controversy about racism in America? Have we reached the point in race relations that we can sing Kumbaya with conviction? CLEAR SKIES IN SEATTLE

September 18-26 found Dr. Burton in Seattle where he participated in the "Dark Clouds, Clear Skies" evangelistic meeting. As part of their strategic objectives for the year, Pastor Eugene Lewis and the Emerald City Community Church decided to conduct a meeting that was planned by the local elders. Dr. Burton was privileged to be invited to preach on the second and third weekends, and to facilitate a Bible discussion each night before the meetings commenced. His first sermon, "Let Go!" focused on the woman with the issue of blood and Jairus, and celebrated the power of faith in times of feebleness. On Sabbath morning he addressed the theme "I Just Don't Have it Anymore," as the widow of Zarapheth was elevated as an example of how to survive tough economic times. Another new sermon was titled "Better than Obamacare" and used the New Testament adaptation of the Shema to encourage the development of healthy "hearts, souls, bodies and minds." The elders and visiting pastors who preached each evening did a great job at delivering the word. At the end of the week, two precious souls followed through on their decision to give their lives to Christ. Lets pray for those who are still in the valley of decision.

AFRICA'S GIFT AT MIRACLE TEMPLE

From September 10-12, the Sabbath in Africa Study Group conducted an informative and engaging seminar at the Miracle Temple Community Church in Baltimore, Maryland. The eventful weekend commenced with Howard University night with presentations from Drs. Bertram Melbourne and Emory Tolbert. The high point of the evening was the Life Service award presented to Dr. Evans Crawford, former Dean of the Chapel at Howard and life time Civil Rights activist. The Washington Adventist University session featured innovative presentations from Drs. Doug Morgan and Joan Francis, and this was followed by a "General Conference" session with Drs. Charles E. Bradford and Pardon Mwansa. A high point of the afternoon sessions was the professionally produced play, "The King and His Sons," and the African Choir. This preceded Pastor Sednak Yankson and Dr. Keith Burton who spoke about Sabbath in the African context. The seminar ended with a roundtable discussion, closing remarks by Dr. Harold Lee and a vesper thought by Elder James Lewis.

SPECTRUM CONTROVERSY: WHERE HAVE ALL OUR THINKERS GONE?

Dr. Burton's September column in Spectrum used the subject of critical thinking to continue the discussion on homosexuality. A number of the comments from his original post were extremely hostile, and he felt the need to address the issue again. The second article challenged the reasoning process in some of the arguments used to oppose his objection to homosexual practice. However, the commentary was written in a rather harsh style and rather than engender understanding only inflamed the discussion more. Dr. Burton is seriously concerned about the moral relativism that has captured so many well meaning Christians, and is truly saddened that many have rejected the Word of God in favor of the postmodern positions of popular psychology.

AUGUST SPECTRUM COLUMN: CIVIL RIGHTS AND SAVAGE WRONGS

South Africa is by far the most modern country on the continent. Although there are many things shared with other African nations, the influence of centuries of European rule have manifested itself in the recent decision by the South African parliament to legalize same-sex marriages. Dr. Burton addressed this in his Spectrum column as he decried the tendency to compare the campaign for homosexual "privileges" with the struggle for African human rights. He also voiced his theory about the addictive nature of homosexual behavior. When he submitted the column to the editors, he expected that his view would generate some controversy in a magazine that has a mostly liberal leadership, but he was not prepared for some of the ad hominem jabs that came fast and furiously. Nonetheless, he believes that God has called him to be a voice of conscience and will gladly address the issue again.
