GETTING TO KNOW GOD'S SON
Have you ever wondered how God looks? We often hear pastors and theologians refer to him as a “person,” and artists often depict him as a strong old man with grey hair and a bushy beard. All of our attempts to define God are really futile. The truth is, God is so mysterious that it is impossible for any artist, pastor, theologian or teacher to portray him. Because of our limitations, our loving God decided that he would make himself known to us. He did this through his Son, Jesus. In this lesson, we will study the basic biblical teachings about Jesus.
QUESTIONS
1. Jesus was born about two-thousand years ago to a Jewish couple named Joseph and Mary. However, Jesus was no ordinary person–he was specially chosen to come to this earth on a mission for his Father. After you have read these texts, use your own words to describe why Jesus came to this earth.
a. Matthew 1:21

b. John 3:16-17

c. Luke 1:30-33
2. Apart from Adam and Eve who were created by God himself, every human being who is born on this earth has a mother and father. However, Jesus was different. Although Mary gave birth to him, he existed long before he was born! This sounds very strange, but he did not exist as a human being, but was fully Divine just like his Father. According to these texts, who was Jesus before he came to earth?
a. John 1:1-3

b. Philippians 2:5

c. Hebrews 1:1-14
3. The previous texts are very clear that Jesus was just like his Father, God. In fact, they refer to him as “God” and make it clear that he was directly involved in the creation of the world. Because Christians claim to worship only one God, this is sometimes difficult to understand. However, from the very first book of the Bible we learn that God was not the only Divine being involved in creation. Read the following texts, and explain how we know that God was not alone in his creation of the world?
a. Genesis 1:26

b. Genesis 3:22
4. The God through whom the world was created was not always known as Jesus. This was the name given him when he was dedicated by his adoptive parents, Mary and Joseph. He only became Jesus after a mysterious miracle. Study the following texts and explain what had to happen before the Son of God could be named Jesus.
a. John 1:14

b. Phillipians 2:7

c. Hebrews 2:14
5. Although he walked this earth a full human being, Jesus still had a divine connection. This cannot be explained in human language, but is a plain teaching of scripture. How do these texts explain Jesus’ divine connection?
a. John 1:18

b. 2 Corinthians 5:19
6. When Jesus came to this earth, he performed the works of his Father by healing the sick, raising the dead, and giving a message of hope to poor and suffering people. After several years of ministry, in which he taught people about the nature of the kingdom of God, Jesus would fulfil his major purpose for coming to this earth (see question 1). Prayerfully read the following passages, and in your own words summarize how Jesus fulfilled his purpose.
a. John 1:29

b. Acts 2:22-36
7. As the “lamb of God” Jesus’ death broke the curse of sin and made it possible for all humans to have access to eternal life in a perfect kingdom. This is the good news of the Bible. Of course, that kingdom is not yet here, but millions of people around the world believe that it will come soon. How do we know that Jesus will establish his new kingdom?
a. John 14:1-3

b. Acts 1:6-11
I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He came to this earth to show God’s love by saving us from all evil. He is coming again soon to be the king of a new perfect kingdom, and I want to be a part of that kingdom.
